As someone living in the Southern Hemisphere I have always been a little envious of all the pumpkin spice recipes that appear this time of year. I thought I would try out some of the recipes I saw on Pinterest but almost every recipe called for the allusive “pumpkin spice”, a simple spice blend found at the local supermarket or grocer. Of course, because pumpkin recipes aren’t as popular here (and because it isn’t Fall) as it is in the Northern Hemisphere it is near impossible to find a pre-blended pumpkin spice on our supermarket shelves.
Not surprisingly, despite taking a few minutes to make, a DIY pumpkin spice blend is actually not that hard to make. In fact, I’d name it one of the simplest recipes on Pretty Wee Things.
Once blended, this DIY pumpkin spice mix will store well in an airtight jar for just as long as the spices would store separately. Take note of the expiry dates of the separate spices and then label the bottom of the jar with an expiry of the nearest date.
The quantities used for this homemade pumpkin spice mix are perfect for tasting the Northern Hemisphere’s Fall ‘star’ dishes, but if you are an avid pumpkin spice lover I would suggest doubling (or even quadrupling) the recipe so you have enough to last you through Fall/pumpkin season.
This DIY pumpkin spice mix would also make a super cute Thanksgiving gift. Place it into a small glass jar as displayed and craft a pretty little label and you have yourself a cheap, thoughtful and useful gift for family and friends.
On to the method!
- 2 tbsp cinnamon
- 2 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp allspice
- 8 whole cloves, ground (or 1 tsp ground cloves)
- Add all ingredients to a mortar and mix together. If you are using whole cloves ground them using the pestle first, then add the remaining spices.
- Transfer the spice blend to a jar that can be sealed (airtight).
- Use in recipes as required.
This recipe yields 11 tsp of pumpkin spice that can be used as required in recipes. In fact, I happen to have two delicious and nourishing pumpkin spice recipes coming in the next few weeks using this very DIY pumpkin spice blend. Stay tuned!
I absolutely adore this DIY pumpkin spice blend in a (nourishing) pumpkin spice latte. I love the sweet flavours from the cinnamon and nutmeg along with more firey flavours of the ginger and allspice. Perfect!
Have you tried pumpkin spice? What do you think?
